Spring care and maintenance

The harsh winter weather makes the grass grow tired. If you follow a few simple steps, the grass will help regain its lush green color and bloom. Raking, repairing damaged areas, revitalizing the lawn and applying proper fertilizer applications will restore the lawn to its shine before winter.

New grass growth

During the cold winter months, the grass goes into a dormant state. It will stop growing, causing its overall appearance to become erratic. Its lack of growth in winter also makes it more susceptible to freezing damage, drainage problems, and snow collection. In order for the grass to bloom and grow properly, winter damage must be repaired.

Clear waste

Allow the area to dry before taking care of the grass. A wet or soaked lawn can be damaged when cultivated. The roots are easily removed from the ground and the blades are bent or broken. Once the grass has dried, tear it well to help aerate the soil. Raking will eliminate accumulated winter waste. It also opens the soil and grass leaves to create air circulation. The good air circulation around the crown of the plants and each grass leaf helps prevent the development of fungal problems. A basic hard tooth extraction works properly to help remove dead lawns and lawns, or a lawn vacuum or a larger lawn leaf blower can help with larger lawns.

Post-winter scarification

Accumulation of bog and straw can occur during the long winter months. Lawn care that suffers from excessive accumulation of straw or moss will benefit from a scarification treatment. Scarification should never occur if there is still a danger of spring frost. Consider making scarification in mid-April or later. If the grass has excessive moss, use a moss killer two or three weeks before cutting. The grass must be freshly cut and moderately moist to make it successful. Use a manual spring rake or electric guard. The goal is to break straw, dead grass plants and weeds. The grass will generally suffer extensive visual damage after cutting. If bare patches occur, consider patching the areas by replanting.

weed

Spring is the ideal time to tackle the pending weeds. In regions where crabgrass is a problem, apply a pre-emergent crabgrass herbicide to the lawn during the first weeks of April. Avoid using a crab herbicide containing fertilizer. Fertilizing the lawn too soon will cause a weak root system. After applying the pre-emergent herbicide, water the lawn with about 1/2 inch water. Mowing the grass at a height of 2 inches will also help control spring weeds. Crabgrass seeds begin to germinate when the soil temperature reaches 60 degrees Fahrenheit, so treatment with a pre-emergent herbicide will help prevent the seeds from germinating.

fertilizer

Fertilizer in the spring replenishes the food supply to the herbal plant. The fertilizer will encourage the herb to develop healthy new growth and a strong root system. A proper and balanced fertilizer creates a thick lawn that can more easily control weeds by drowning them. Apply fertilizer when the grass begins to show signs of latent rupture. The roots of the grass will grow when the temperature is between 55 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Its greatest growth will develop as the temperature reaches 60 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Fertilizer never a lawn too early in the spring because new growth can be damaged if a late frost occurs. Use a balanced grass fertilizer in the spring and avoid high nitrogen mixtures. A high nitrogen content fertilizer will encourage the grass to grow and develop a deep green color but a low root system. Low root will not withstand summer drought.

Apply fertilizer on the grass in mid-May. Use a fertilizer that offers at least 1 pound of nitrogen for every 1,000 square feet of lawn. The fertilizer mark generally has general application guidelines. After applying the fertilizer, be sure to saturate the lawn to prevent the lawn from being damaged by the fertilizer. Nitrogen can burn grass rays. A nitrogen fertilizer
